What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a common injection-based treatment that Dr. Alisha Detorres uses at Coastal Health to treat chronic musculoskeletal conditions and joint pain in her Port Townsend, Sequim, and Joyce, WA patients. This treatment uses dextrose solution, a natural solution, to stimulate the body's natural repair of connective tissues, like tendons, ligaments, joints, and more. These treatments can help treat pain, inflammation, and even increase an individual's range of motion. What Can I Expect from Joint Injections?

Prolotherapy, sometimes known as homeopathic joint injections, is an excellent solution for pain and inflammation. This treatment is commonly used on the knees, hips, shoulders, and other joints, ligaments, and muscles to:

  • Improve strength
  • Increase function
  • Increase range of movement
  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce stiffness

To begin your treatment, Dr. Detorres will use an ultrasound to review your impacted areas so she can identify the issue and generate a treatment plan that will best benefit you. From there, dextrose solution will be injected into your problem areas to stimulate the body's natural healing process and build new tissues. This new tissue will work to strengthen the joint, muscle, or more, and reduce pain. Oftentimes, our patients report feeling better after just one visit, but we typically suggest three visits spaced about a month apart for optimal results. This is something Dr. Detorres will establish while creating your custom treatment plan.
