What is PRP Therapy?
At Coastal Health, Dr. Alisha Detorres is pleased to provide platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to rejuvenate your look. PRP therapy is one of the most sought-after cosmetic treatments due to its strong results and its use of your body's platelets to treat a variety of skin conditions. Utilizing a special, nutrient-rich serum created from your own blood plasma, PRP can help reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and loose skin on the face and body. To learn more about PRP therapy, reach out to our Port Angeles, WA office to schedule a consultation. Dr. Detorres would be excited to discuss the benefits of PRP with you today.
What Can I Expect From Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatments?
After you're seated comfortably in one of our private minor procedure areas, a small amount of blood is taken from your arm and placed in a centrifuge machine. We typically remove around four tablespoons of blood, or just over a tenth of the amount given when you donate blood. After approximately 15 minutes on the centrifuge, the blood separates into its components. Combining the blood plasma, platelets, and our nutrient-rich formula, we create a serum that can then be reintroduced into the blood vessels just beneath problem areas on your skin. The serum is placed into a sterile syringe and injected into the locations determined during your consultation. The injections usually only take around 5 – 15 minutes, depending on the patient.
Your body's own platelets work to heal the skin in the target area, just like they would a cut or a scrape. PRP boosts collagen and elastin production to create taut, youthful-looking skin. Because your own blood is used, the risk of allergic reaction is minimized, and you can experience a safe procedure that provides robust and long-lasting results. You can expect to have some redness, swelling, and slight tenderness after your procedure, but this should go away in a day or two. You may start to see some results after about 4 – 6 weeks, but full results usually are seen after around three months.
PRP Therapy FAQ
How much does PRP therapy cost?
PRP therapy costs will be dependent on where you are getting it, plus if it is combined with another cosmetic procedure. Your technician will give you a cost estimate in your consultation at Coastal Health then discuss payment methods we accept.
How long do results from PRP therapy last?
Visible results from PRP therapy may last for up to eight weeks. The results will vary in each person and depends on the area being treated. One of the advantages of this treatment is that it does not require surgery or significant downtime, plus it is less expensive.
What are the risks and complications of PRP therapy?
The risks for PRP therapy on its own are extremely minor and include only prolonged bruising and swelling. If combined with microneedling, potential risks include skin infection, pigment changes, and delayed healing. This is why it’s important to have microneedling performed by an experienced technician.
Will PRP help replenish volume?
PRP therapy cannot increase volume. While PRP therapy offers great results since it rejuvenates your skin and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, PRP treatments do not increase volume. If you wish to contour areas on your face, then dermal fillers may be a better treatment choice for you.
Is PRP therapy painful?
PRP injections feel like a wrinkle filler or relaxer injection with the extra step of extracting the plasma. Typically, patients will feel a little pinch or pressure at the time of injection. If you are worried about feeling pain, ask if you can receive numbing cream before the injection is performed.
